My process in Laie is thus...
- Stare longingly at the half a dozen green mangoes in the two trees in our backyard.
- Find a step stool and a long stick to help me get one of the green mangoes out of the tree and into my hand.
- Set the green mango, which was rock hard on the kitchen counter.
- Wait 10 days, gently squeezing the mango daily to judge its squishiness.
- When patience runs out, peel and slice the mango.
- Enjoy sweet, joyful bliss of a home grown mango.
Even better, I put some mango slices in the stash of fresh pineapple in the fridge. By lunchtime, it was heavenly pineapple/mango bliss. Better than candy.
The rest of the mangos on our trees do not have a chance. Next up, bananas... the first showed up on the tree a week ago.
Great post. How I wish I could eat even that garbage in your sink.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Do they ripen all year long? Do you have other fruit trees, too?
ReplyDeleteI propose a fruit exchange. Fresh mango in exchange for fresh apples. Or peaches. Or whatever you start to miss. Anything for fresh mango. If only we knew someone at FedEx to get this exchange set up...
ReplyDeleteAre you two still ok or were you swept away in the last storm?
